Northwest ocean coasts are immensely diverse, in part because the coast itself is so diverse, including mudflats, fine sandy beaches, and rocky benches. Intertidal monitoring documents the abundance and diversity of hundreds of marine organisms present along the coast. Because water temperature affects intertidal community structure, the monitoring also includes temperature data logger deployed along the shore. As of 2008, 11 rocky intertidal sites have been established in the NCCN parks, along with 8 sandy beach sites and 13 temperature monitoring stations.
